NOTICE REGARDING PEDIATRIC FEVER/PAIN MEDICATIONS
If you are calling to request a prescription for acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and/or ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), please be advised that NO prescription is needed despite what has been reported in the news. This has been confirmed by statements from the Canadian Pediatric Society and the Canadian Pharmacy Association.
If you cannot find pediatric acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and/or ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) on the shelf, your pharmacist may be able to make a pediatric version out of existing adult stock; this is called compounding. Again, we do not provide prescriptions for this as they are not needed. Do NOT try this at home as home-made versions are very unsafe and can harm your child. Please see your pharmacist.
A fever is often a sign of infection and can be managed with Tylenol® and/or an anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil® or Motrin®. Cool fluids, luke warm baths, and cool compresses applied on the forehead and nape of the neck can also help.
Please note that Tylenol® is safe for infants/children of all ages, while Advil® or Motrin® should only be used for infants/children 6 months of age and older.
WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION:
-
If your child is less than 3 months old and has a fever, then they should be taken to Grand River Hospital Emergency Department for assessment.
-
If your child is between 3 and 6 months old with a fever, then please call us to book them for an in-person appointment to be assessed by a physician.
-
If your child is over 6 months with a fever and no other symptoms, they can often be managed at home until other symptoms arise or if the fever is persisting. If you are uncertain and/or concerned, please call us for further direction.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter as we strive to provide quality care and remain a central part of your health.
