This is a message from Central KW Family Health regarding Ticks and their diseases.

 

Ticks are present in through different parts of the world and are becoming more prevalent in Southern Ontario and can be found in parks, trails, backyards, and other outdoor spaces.

To protect yourself: 

         1. Wear light coloured clothing

         2. Wear long sleeved shirts and pants and tuck your pants into your socks

         3. Stay on the trail and avoid walking in the tall grass

         4. Wear an insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin. 

         5. Do a tick check after being outside

For ticks to infect they must bite and stay on your person for 12 to 24 hours to transmit disease.

To remove a tick you can: 

        1. Come into the office

Ticks can carry a number of different pathogens: 

        1. Lyme disease

        2. Anaplasmosis

        3. Babesiosis

        4. Powassan virus

Symptoms to monitor for are: 

         Rash (bullseye for Lyme disease)

         Fever/chills

         Arthralgias (joint pains)

         Headaches

         Fatigue
